Supporting Students with Special Needs in the Diocese of Orlando Catholic Schools
The Office of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Orlando is committed to providing inclusive educational opportunities for students with special needs, based on the resources available at individual schools. While Catholic schools are not required by law to provide 504 plans or the full range of services indicated in Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or Service Plans (SPs), many of our schools offer tailored programs and learning environments to support diverse student needs.
Admissions for Students with Special Needs
The admission process for students with special needs begins with a comprehensive review of the student’s records, including IEPs or other documentation. Each school evaluates its ability to provide appropriate resources and support. This process involves documentation review, interviews, and thoughtful decision-making by school administrators to ensure every student’s needs are met effectively.
Specialized Schools and Programs
The Diocese of Orlando offers specialized options for students with significant disabilities, such as Morning Star Catholic School, which is dedicated to supporting students with unique learning needs.
Additionally, students enrolled in private schools with IEPs will have their plans converted into Service Plans (SPs) through the local public school district. These plans provide limited services and vary by district, and parents are responsible for coordinating these arrangements with their district.
Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities
The Family Empowerment Scholarship Program offers families of students with disabilities, starting at age three, access to a personal education savings account (ESA). An ESA can be used to fund:
Private school tuition and fees
Online learning programs
Private tutoring
Community college costs
Higher education expenses
Customized learning services and materials
